Trump orders end of government DEI programs, LGBT protections
Donald Trump, the former U.S. President, has recently repealed numerous executive orders from his predecessor, Joe Biden, that supported LGBTQ+ equality. He also issued new orders mandating only two genders and ending federal diversity programs, a move that solidifies his break with what he refers to as “woke” culture.
During his campaign, Trump criticized diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) policies in the federal government and corporate sectors, claiming they discriminated against white people, particularly white men.
One of his new executive orders condemned the Biden administration for implementing what he described as "illegal and immoral discrimination programs" under the guise of DEI. These programs, he argued, were embedded in various aspects of the federal government, from military operations to airline safety.
Trump also targeted gender diversity, particularly transgender people, focusing on transgender women in sports and gender-affirming care for children.
In a rally before his supporters in Washington, Trump overturned 78 executive orders, actions, and memoranda issued by Biden, many of which promoted diversity, equality, and LGBTQ+ rights in government, workplaces, healthcare, and education.
This action fulfilled a campaign promise to scale back programs designed to address historical inequalities, which Trump claimed disadvantaged white people, especially white men.
Trump’s new directives specifically eliminated protections against discrimination based on gender identity and sexual orientation, and ended programs intended to address equity for Black, Hispanic, and Pacific Islander Americans.
In another executive order, he required federal agencies to recognize only two genders — male and female — eliminating other gender identities such as "X" on passport applications. The order also mandated that agencies stop funding "gender ideology," a term Trump used to describe policies that recognize gender diversity beyond the binary.
His administration is now focused on using "clear and accurate language" that affirms men and women as biologically male and female, rejecting any non-binary gender recognition.
These policies are likely to face legal challenges, especially from LGBTQ+ rights advocates. Outside the historic Stonewall Inn in New York, a landmark in the LGBTQ+ rights movement, activists expressed their opposition to the changes, emphasizing the profound impact these policies would have on individuals' lives.
Experts warned that these new regulations could jeopardize access to gender-affirming medical care, particularly for minors, and affect federal healthcare programs such as Medicare and Medicaid. Trump has pledged to ban gender-affirming care for minors and take legal action against doctors and educators who provide or support such treatments.
The LGBTQ Victory Fund, which works to elect pro-equality candidates, highlighted the increasing importance of their work amid the continued pushback against LGBTQ+ rights. Additionally, the LGBT National Help Center has reported a significant increase in calls since the election results, signaling growing concerns within the community.
Trump’s campaign rallies often featured anti-transgender rhetoric, which received enthusiastic support from his audience, further deepening the divide in U.S. political discourse on LGBTQ+ issues.
