Olivia Hussey Eisley, widely celebrated for her role as Juliet in the iconic film Romeo and Juliet, has passed away peacefully at her home on December 27, surrounded by her loved ones. Her family shared the heartbreaking news through a statement on Instagram, saying, “Olivia was an extraordinary individual whose kindness, wisdom, and warmth left a lasting impression on everyone she met.” Hussey Eisley’s portrayal of Juliet in Franco Zeffirelli’s adaptation of Shakespeare’s timeless love story earned her a Golden Globe, marking a significant milestone in her career. The film, while celebrated, faced controversy decades later. In 2022, Hussey Eisley and co-star Leonard Whiting filed a lawsuit against Paramount Studios, alleging that nude scenes involving them as minors were included without proper consent. The lawsuit was eventually dismissed in 2023.
Beyond Romeo and Juliet, Hussey Eisley had an illustrious career in film and television. She starred in the 1974 horror classic Black Christmas, the 1978 adaptation of Agatha Christie’s Death on the Nile, and portrayed Mary in Zeffirelli’s 1977 miniseries Jesus of Nazareth. In the 1990s, she ventured into the horror genre with appearances in Psycho IV: The Beginning and the Stephen King adaptation It. Her later roles included the biographical film Mother Teresa, the thriller El Grito, and the comedy Tortilla Heaven. Born on April 17, 1951, in Buenos Aires, Olivia was known for her passion for the arts, spirituality, and love for animals. She is survived by her husband of 35 years, David Glen Eisley, her three children—Alex, Max, and India—and her grandson, Greyson. “Olivia’s legacy of love and dedication will remain in our hearts forever,” her family expressed. “We deeply appreciate your support during this time and kindly ask for privacy as we grieve the loss of such a remarkable soul.” This story is still developing and will be updated as more information becomes available.
